Getting into the swing of things in Texas seems to be the easiest thing to do when you are talking about the rod and custom club, Chupa Cabras of Dallas when they hosted their annual Kustom Kulture show. Taking a break from our everyday import scene we strolled with the rest of the hep cats to their recent show at Show n' Go Chrome shop. Rolling up to this spectacle, who would of thought you could get this many old school cars, trucks, bands, Levi's and pompadours in one parking lot. You name it, primer or paint - it was there in its vintage glory making this one tasty hot rod haven. This wasn't your typical "hot rods that never come out of the garage show." This was a show where those who don't understand the difference in bodywork and styles between the new and the old get a new sort of lesson. These rides were the kind that you might find on the street passing by with flame throwers shooting, or the owners looking oddly like they never left the 50's. There was plenty of talent and metal work abound to educate the entire crowd. Chopped, channeled, sectioned, and freshly welded were all too plainly laid out in front of us as we feasted our eyes on the goodies at hand. The rides weren't the only thing that had us mesmerized. From the vendors who were pinstriping in the parking lot, to the beautiful modern day pinup girls flashing their ruby red lips, to the swingin' sounds of some our old favorites - there was definitely something for everyone. Show n' Go had even set up an art gallery inside their shop to display some of the local rockabilly talent in its full blazin' style. Also, Rob's Chop shop had brought along one of their dated barber chairs and was shaping things up for all the local greasers and several other vendors brought some of there vintage jewelry, clothes and other knick knacks to sale. Have you ever noticed how captivating people watching can be?

Even though this scene was something a little different from what we are all used to, it was definitely something refreshing. Lost among those retro rods and gals, we were all reminded of our beginnings whether we love them or not. We also learned that oil leaks (really bad ones) apply to just about everyone. The next time you have a weekend down from whatever is in your garage, saunter out to the local hot rod show for a lesson and definitely a few "new" ideas. Until then stay cool, daddy-os and dolls!Text by Christina McCanliesPhotos by Kevin McCanlies
