Scr8p Fest
Scr8p Fest
It's BACK!!!! After disappearing for two long years, Scr8p Fest hosted by Pebble Pushers (Pp) is back and it's bigger and better than ever. For those of you in the southeast, seeing a member of Pebble Pushers at a show is a common occurrence. Since they have been showing for quite some time now, putting on a show of their own is not a hard task. This years show was the first one since 1998. Since there was a little break between shows, it allowed Pp to really improve the 2001 show. This show had almost double the turn out as the previous '98 show. It's probably the best one-day show I've attended. The show field was the parking lot to the Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, NC. It's nice to go to a show with ALL paved parking!
Being the show was only a couple hours away from my house, some of the local //RA and //NC guys and I didn't plan to leave until about 6am that morning. Well…. like I said, "PLAN" to leave! As usual, someone had to be about an hour late. Just when those of us that were there on time were ready to pull off, up pulls one of the "Late as always //NC guys"! Why is it that every show I go to, I'm always waiting on one of those damn Camber guys? Haha.. Anyway, at about 7:30, after loading Wes (ImFukenlow) Frisbee's truck on the trailer we finally hit the road. Once at the show exit, we proceeded to the local car wash for a quick rinse. Then, it was off to the show. That's where the fun began!
While crossing a set of railroad tracks, the supply line from my air tank to my valves decided to come loose. Luckily my air tank was turned off! (I'm running a SCUBA tank). After fixing it and pulling into the show it popped again and emptied my tank. After about 30 minutes on the phone trying to find a SCUBA shop within driving distance, I sent my wife, who wasn't happy about having to do it, 20 miles through Charlotte to the SCUBA shop with one of my friends to get the tank refilled. Once they got back with the tank, I spent another hour trying to fix all the leaks and numerous busted airlines. The air system must not have liked the hot weather! Luckily, Rodney Owens, the owner of The Hack Shack North Carolina, was attending the show and helped me get the system up and going again, along with a few borrowed parts from fellow show goers. That just goes to show how we always help each other out in times of need. Next show I'll make sure I have plenty of spare parts! Now that I had killed more than half the day trying to get my car back together so it could make it back home, it was time to start shooting the show!
After the quick confiscation of a razor scooter from Dave in Slammed Impressions, I set off to get an overview of the show. My initial pass through the show was side tracked by running into several people I only get to talk to at shows. There were several vendors and a wide variety of show vehicles. Everything from a lowrider style Impala to body dropped trucks to imports were in attendance. There were also several clubs such as Relaxed Atmosphere, Negative Camber, Animated Attractions, Slammed Impressions and Lowered Atmosphere in attendance. The show field was packed by lunchtime. With over 250 entries, Robbie, Bubba and the other Pebble Pushers did an excellent job of organizing the parking and taking care of judging. Just about everywhere you turned you could see a Pp shirt or two walking around with clipboards and 2-way radios. Through out the day various door prizes were given out by Pp members and their wives or girlfriends. They held several games such as Tug-O-War and Stuff-A-Car. There was also a stereo contest held throughout the day, as well as a hydro contest. As the day proceeded and the temperature seemed to rise, the Pp guys were finishing up last minute judging to get ready for awards. The awards ceremonies were in the best location I've ever seen. Since the show was being held in the parking lot of a minor league baseball field, there happen to be perfect access to stadium seats. The trophies were handed out from atop a dugout. The show was so organized, there was even someone directing leaving traffic.
Some of the proceeds were given to the St. Jude Children's Hospital in the name of Wayne Costa and his girlfriend Leslie Bowen who were a big part of our show scene and who lost their lives a few weeks prior to the Pp show returning home from a show. Those that registered in the show received tickets to the ball game that night in which Wayne's mom threw out the first pitch in his behalf.
Next years Scr8pFest will be bigger and better with the addition of more classes. For more info you can go to www.PebblePushers.com or call Bubba at 704-662-8234 or Kenneth at 704-933-3793. If you live anywhere near North Carolina…. go ahead and make plans to attend next year, cause its gonna be a kick ass show! This is definitely a show I won't miss again!
