Heritage 2K3 Reload
There's a sign in Letcher County that says- Welcome to Whitesburg, Home of 1534 friendly people plus 2 grouches. Well let me tell you something. Those 2 people must have been on vacation this weekend. If there's a ill tempered person in the area they stayed a far distance from this show.
We got in to town on Friday afternoon and were taken with the beauty of the mountains. After getting into our room and resting for a couple hours we went downtown to the early arrival cruise. After we got parked in the lot we were greeted by Lee Caudill's parents , two of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. They had a concession stand set up and were serving food and drinks to the participants. The cost was unbelievable - FREE. Talk about taking care of someone. About 7PM or so the lot was full and then the police arrived. Most places that would not be a good sign. But in Whitesburg it means the beginning of more fun. After the Sheriff's department took some time to blackout their tires ,they lead a parade through
town. As we turned the corner to start up Main Street we were met by a curious sight. The sidewalks were lined, no JAMMED, with spectators waiting to see the trucks and cars that had come to their fine little town to be part of the Heritage 2K3 Reload show. When we returned to the lot there were even more cars there as people were arriving all the time. By 10PM most of us were headed back to the Super 8 where the fun continued with people railing and scraping up and down the road in front of the motel.
The next day we got to the show about 9AM and the site was already filling up. There more quite a few trucks there that had been featured in magazines and even more that will be in time. The quality of the rides being built today is getting better all the time and it's very evident at the Heritage Reload Show. Last year this show had 113 entries. This year there were 240. The guys from Sub Terra Minis had the hard task of keeping things going smoothly and judging. For a young show with a mind boggling growth rate there were few problems.
Of Course (insert John's Rant Here) there's always a few people who are never happy. The people who have no clue what it takes to put on a show of this caliber and wouldn't care anyway. All they are worried about is a trophy. But even a trophy doesn't please some of these people. Lee Caudill and Sub Terra Minis went so far as to have over 150 awards to give out. Now simple math says that with 150 awards and 240 entries, some people aren't going to get a trophy. Wouldn't be much of a contest if everyone won would it? Oddly enough, these aren't the people who whine and cry. It's the people who don't win what they want. That's right, they won a trophy but not the one they wanted. Poor, poor things. Must be a burden to have to win while others do without. There's more I can say on the subject but that's another post.
Back to the show.
There's more I can say but this is running long. Let me try to break it down best I can- Great people + Great town + Great cars and trucks + Great weather = One of the Best shows I've been to in a long time.
