If anyone had told me that the highway 45 from Ft. Worth to Houston was down to one lane the weekend after Thanksgiving, and all the rednecks would be headed back home to Angus (wherever the hell that is on the map) I would have rented some off road beast to explore the Texas hell holes on the way there. Of course, I had to work Saturday, so Kevin and I didn't make it out of Dallas until around 4:00 pm, which would have been fine except by the time we had stopped at every truck stop to check out their DUB collections, sample beef jerky and flip off toothless greasy men, it was 8:30 pm when Sam Houston greeted us. We made it to the Astrodome around 9:00 pm hoping to make into the show for the last hour and get oriented with the layout of what we were after. When we pulled into the show, we drove around half of the building to find out the show closed at 9:00 pm and not 10 pm like the flyers advertised. Oh well, we made an early night and planned for a long day on Sunday. The 43rd Annual Houston Autorama was held at Reliant Center Hall next to the Astrodome, which feels like the Astrodome after you walk around half of it to find the right person to let you in. We made it in an hour before the doors opened to the public, and were greeted with more than what was expected. The entire place was filled from one side to the other with hotrods, minitrucks, imports, motorcycles, those vehicles you aren't really sure what they are, or were, and a swap meet full of stocked vendors. If you have never been to an indoor Autorama, you have to understand that this show is formed around the kind of judging where they get down on their knees to see how much dirt you have on your rockers. Rides roll out here with full blown displays and suspensions you can eat off of. This show originally opened to hot rods and has expanded it horizons to allow just about anything worthy to enter and they pay well for the awards they offer. It's definitely the show to collect new ideas from the people who invent and pioneer them.

I do have to give props and mention the unity of the car clubs that represented. What we are used to as club participation triples at an event like this. Severed Ties, Krusty Kustoms, and the VW club - Clean Rides, (which had an awesome custom music video of all their rides), rolled out in style. The Triple A BMX team put on a great show and the major sponsors of Autorama - O'Reilly, DuPont, and American Wheel and Tire spared no expense to display their latest and greatest. For a true American car show, that opens it doors to only the best, Houston Autorama had an amazing all day turn out. If you want a place to get great ideas, great products, or just enjoy the air conditioning this is the place to go. Autorama hosts their shows several times a month in different states and cities from November through April. You can check out there website at www.Autorama.com to find the next upcoming show nearest you.Photos by: Kevin McCanlies aka - WkdwgnArticle by: Christina a.k.a - RlrGrl
